It was 2:30 as I peered out my living room window, through closed curtains. My stomach knotted as I heard the familiar, faint squeal of brakes. Turning my head to the right, I could see it coming.
No, it wasn’t a police car.
It wasn’t the FBI,
Not even an unwanted guest… it was worse.
It was the jeep driven by our mailman.
Wait! What??
Yes – you heard me right, it was the mailman, and I dreaded his arrival each and every day.
Maybe you think I’m being a bit extreme, but I had a strong aversion to anything associated with the US Postal Service. I hated seeing that jeep. I know that it was only the US Mail, but the truth is, a few years ago, the last thing I wanted was mail.
You see, I had dug myself into a terrible financial hole. The only thing that came in the mail was bad news: bills, warnings, threats, and worse. If only they wouldn’t come, I wouldn’t be reminded of where I was.
I don’t even want to tell you about how I felt when the phone rang…My pulse raced. My palms got sweaty. My eyes darted. I was in full-fledged panic mode. Good Lord! I was a wreck!!
I hated how I felt, yet I couldn’t see a way out. I felt trapped.
I felt that way until I learned how to take charge of my money.
I had been listening to a guy by the name of Dave Ramsey on the radio. He introduced me to a class called Financial Peace University.
It was a real Godsend! In that class I learned about the 7 Baby Steps to Financial Peace.
As I started to get control of my money, I began to feel better. For the first time, I had money in the bank. I was able to cover small emergencies by paying cash. My debt started to shrink. In fact, today, I’ve eliminated all but one non-mortgage debt, and that one is shrinking rapidly.
What about you?
How do you feel when you see the truck pulling up to the mailbox?
Do you have a pile of unopened mail?
Does your stomach do flips when the phone rings?
Do you avoid the phone?
Do you wish things could be different, better?
They can!
By implementing the Baby Steps, I have changed my life and that of my whole family. I’ve had a $70,000 turn around in 3 years, and things keep getting better.
I believed in this process so much that I not only completed Financial Peace University, but I became one of the Ramsey Preferred Coaches. This page tells you about what a Ramsey Coach is and how we work.
What if I’m not in this situation? Is coaching for me?
Yes, absolutely. Not only do we help people learn how to deal with debt, but we help you dream, set and meet goals, help you set priorities and strategies, and often we act as your accountability partners on the path to wealth.
Don’t hate the mailman, and don’t fear the ringing phone. Take control of your money.
